Synopsis

 
 

Join us for an intimate fireside chat on the practical steps corporates can take to minimise costs when resolving disputes, including how law firms can assist with the recovery of such costs. We will be discussing, amongst other things, the dispute resolution options available, smart drafting of dispute resolution clauses, the ways companies can shift the financial burden of proceedings to third parties, as well as appropriate alternative fee arrangements. Mediation and case management techniques will also be touched on.

Adrian Wong, Deputy Head of Dispute Resolution Group at Rajah & Tann Singapore LLP, is involved in a wide range of civil and commercial litigation areas including commercial fraud, securities-related and banking claims, joint venture and shareholder disputes, succession and trust law, real property (including en-bloc sale litigation) as well as construction and projects. He is also active in international and domestic arbitrations, both as counsel and arbitrator.


Called to the Bar in 2000, Adrian has been described as "thorough, smart and responsive". His expertise in the area of dispute resolution has been recognised in various legal publications including The Legal 500 Asia Pacific, Asialaw Leading Lawyers and Benchmark Litigation.

   
 

Speakers

   
 

Jansen Chow, Partner at Rajah & Tann Singapore LLP, is with the firm’s Commercial Litigation group. He appears regularly before the Singapore Courts and is active in domestic and international arbitration. His practice covers a wide range of commercial matters with a strong emphasis on disputes, often with challenging issues of law, including cross-border elements and foreign law.


He was appointed as a member of the Young Amicus Curiae scheme with the Singapore High Court for two terms in 2010 and 2011. His main areas of practice include commercial disputes, banking and securities law, and arbitration.

   
 

Avinash Pradhan, Partner at Rajah & Tann Singapore LLP, is involved in a broad spectrum of commercial and corporate disputes. He is familiar with conducting international arbitrations under the major arbitral institutions as well as ad-hoc arbitrations, and he regularly appears in the Supreme Court of Singapore.


Avinash sits on the Singapore International Arbitration Centre's Users' Council. He has been recognised in the 2017 and 2018 editions of Best Lawyers International as one of Singapore's leading lawyers in the field of international arbitration. Avinash was the recipient of the Sir Dingle Foot Scholarship from Gray's Inn, in 2006.

   
 

Dirk Knottenbelt, Partner at Houthoff, leads the firm’s arbitration team and specialises in complex corporate law and commercial arbitrations and litigation. The majority of his work focuses on arbitration and other dispute settlement procedures with an international dimension. His clients are mostly Dutch, US and other international companies. Dirk represents clients in national and international commercial and investment arbitrations, under the auspices of the ICC, NAI, ICSID and other institutional rules, such as GAFTA, NZV, AVZ and FENEX. Dirk also acts as an arbitrator in ad hoc and institutional arbitrations, and as a deputy justice at the Dutch courts of appeal.


   
 

Marielle Koppenol-Laforce, Partner at Houthoff and Professor at Leiden University, The Netherlands, has been advising and litigating (including investment arbitration and international commercial arbitration (ICC, ICSID, NAI, UNCITRAL, DIAC) in complex international contracts situations (ranging from construction contracts to shareholders agreements disputes) and insolvencies. Usually her litigation or arbitration in the Netherlands is a parallel to foreign proceedings for the same client. She is regularly involved in discovery under 28 U.S.C. § 1782 for use in the Dutch proceedings. Before fully committing to international litigation and arbitration and coordination of worldwide law firms in connection therewith, she has been involved in the finance practice, M&A and corporate practice.


Marielle is the lead lawyer of the Houthoff team that accomplished the set aside of the Yukos Awards. She also won a substantial award against the Republic of Ghana.
